TRAUMDENKEN 2000

MEANWHILE Gallery, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, New Zealand

July 1 - 18, 2020

Translated literally from German as dream-thinking, traumdenken refers to the absurd and suggestible logic experienced in the unconscious mind's dream state. All will be familiar with the innate leaps of judgement so common in dreams, in which effect is taken for cause, and the most outlandish propositions are accepted in an instant, giving rise to extreme wonderment upon waking and discovering the folly of one’s own mind. The portmanteau traumdenken was coined by Friedrich Nietzsche, and refers not only to literal dreams, but also to the dreamlike waking states of the forgotten and formative eras of human evolution.
